The Bf109D was used as the German Air Force's primary fighter just prior to World War II, from the Spanish Civil War to the Polish invasion, but they quickly switched to the Bf109E. The D-1 was powered by a Junkers Jumo 210Da liquid-cooled engine and the armament was an MG17 machine gun with two doors on top of the nose and wing. The D-1 was exported to Hungary, Spain and Switzerland, but those delivered to Switzerland were not armed, and since the Swiss-made F1 MG29 machine gun was installed locally, the breech size and position of the gun was different; a large bulge was therefore required in the cowling by the windscreen.
