Scale Model M198 155mm Medium Towed Howitzer (Early Version) 02306 Trumpeter 1:35

Development of the M198 155mm towed howitzer began in 1968, when a lightweight howitzer was sought to replace the World War II M114 155mm howitzer. A prototype test bed was developed and built at the Rock Island Army Arsenal in 1969 and firing tests began in 1970. After initial firing tests, two prototype M198 howitzers were delivered to the Army in 1972, and after additional testing, the M198 howitzer entered production in 1978. The Army's first M198 unit became operational in April 1979. Since entering production, more than 1,600 units have been manufactured, with the last units leaving Rock Island in 1992.
