The Panzerkampfwagen V Panther (SdKfz 171) is a medium battle tank used by the German Army during World War II, from July 1943 at the Battle of Kursk, to May 8, 1945.

Designed to counter the Soviet T-34 tank and replace the Panzerkampfwagen III and Panzerkampfwagen IV, it was ultimately used alongside them until the end of the war, in three main versions: "D", "A", "G".

A last version "F" was planned, before the final replacement of the "Panther" by the "E-50" tank. A "Panther 2" was also studied with the gun and running gear of the "Tiger II", but it did not go further than the drawing board because of the end of hostilities.

Ausf G: 2,950 examples from March 1944. Simplification of production:

  • plate of only one part on the sides, one does not find any more the vertical unhooking with the back
  • the front plate loses the driver's vision block, replaced by a periscope on the cockpit roof
  • the Schurzen are fixed on a steel blade which runs along the sides
  • the headlight is lowered on the mudguard
  • the left exhaust has only one pipe
  • the rear deck is redesigned.

Late production: hit deflector at the bottom of the front face of the turret, to eliminate the trap that was deflecting the enemy shells towards the roof of the superstructure. On about twenty late production machines, the rubber-tired rollers are replaced by "all-steel" rollers.
